About Sue Trusty, the Trusty Gardener
A native of Indianapolis, I earned a B.S. in Horticulture and teachers certification in Agricultural Education from Purdue University. My first job post-college was teaching Horticulture at a correctional facility for teenaged girls.
I moved to Livermore, CA, where I taught high school and college horticulture classes and co-owned an herb and edible flower business. When an opportunity arose for me to attend grad school at the University of Arizona, I jumped at the chance, sold the business to my partner, and moved to Tucson. A year later, I had my M.S. degree in Horticulture/Plant Science.
Next stop: Upstate New York. I worked as teaching support staff, managing a student lab in the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Department at Cornell University. Although I loved New York, I couldn’t wait to move someplace sunnier and return to my true passion – horticulture!
After moving to North Carolina, I served as the consumer horticulture agent for the Cooperative Extension Service in Charlotte-Mecklenburg County. This was a terrific job, where I answered any and all horticulture questions and trained Master Gardener volunteers.
Since moving to Cincinnati in 1998, I have been director of education at the Civic Garden Center of Greater Cincinnati and was, for five years, the City Gardener on WNKU. I am currently an adjunct instructor of horticulture at the University of Cincinnati, a freelance garden writer, speaker, and horticultural coach/consultant.
I am a Regional Director for the Garden Writer’s Association, and belong to the Perennial Plant Association, OFA – an Organization of Floriculture Professionals, the American Horticultural Society, the Civic Garden Center of Greater Cincinnati, and SafeLawns.org, an organization promoting natural lawn care and grounds maintenance.
An avid gardener, I specialize in herbs, flowers, edibles and anything of interest to urban/suburban gardeners.
