Interesting comments, Jamie. You do need to check every day during the "season" to keep on top of things! I forgot to mention that the ferns are terrific in flower arrangements.

We have a raised bed for our asparagus since it's a perennial, and I think ours is Jersey Giant too. My kids get so excited to go out there and "hunt" the tiny little heads as they just start to come up in early spring. It's something you have to check every day though! Ours will grow inches in a day and you can shoot right past the tender days if you miss harvesting for a day or two.

I know a friend who actually grows some mostly FOR the ferns for using in flower arrangements later in the summer.

Thanks, Ed. They certainly are the backbone of the garden. I only wish I had planted more when I first moved here!

Adding wood ashes is o.k. in moderation. Dust in thin layers rather than dumping in a whole pile at once. This will increase the potassium content of the pile. Compost cant be too rich - but if it is not completely broken down, it can burn the plants or rob them of nitrogen temporarily. Once it is broken down enough to smell sweet and earthy, and the particles are no longer distinguishable, it is o.k. to use.
